Details on the Grand Illumination
Starting at 9AM this morning, 10th Street has been closed from Cary Street to the James Center parking deck. The parking garage can be accessed from Canal Street after 4PM, and parking costs $3.00. The illumination happens at 6Pm sharp, but get there early for The Peppas, VCU's extremely energetic and popular pep band, will lather up the crowd from 5:45 to 5:55, and the countdown will begin at 5:59. After the illumination, the two blocks around the James Center will have a host of activities and entertainment options for the whole family, with Virginia's own Kings of Swing providing the tunes for the adults, while Silly Bus will be commanding the kid's stage. Also present will be The Greater Richmond Children's Choir, Patsy Butler, Bon Air Baptist Church's Coventry Handbells, Virginia Rep's case of Mame, and more. This is an event not to miss!
About The James Center
Because of the location's position on the James River, the James Center was designed to evoke the history of the area while providing an interesting and functional mixed-use space for business, food and entertainment, and more. Today, the James Center is home to First Capital Bank, Covington Travel, McGuire Woods, The Bull & Bear Club and more. The center is also home to a number of public art pieces, the most prominent of which is Lloyd Lillie's "Wind's Up" bronze figures straining against a bronze mast that stands 50 feet.
