Illuminations in the 1700's meant gunfire and fireworks. They were used to commemorate very special occasions, like battle victories, the king or queen's birthday, or to welcome a new governor to the colony. Colonial Williamsburg, in keeping with that tradition, puts on the explosive dog every holiday season, and it's a not-to-miss event. Hang out in Revolutionary City, check out the many, many door wreaths and other decorations, and enjoy musical acts on three or four stages. Williamsburg Grand Illumination 2014 is just slightly better than last year, and next year will be even better than now. Make this special event one of your annual traditions.
